The valve trombone is a DIFFERENT instrument than the slide trombone. Similar in tone but the articulation is different and the air flow needs to be different. it is not a bass trumpet or a substitute for a slide trombone. It has is own beauty and you need the proper thinking to play it well.
Barry Mosley has been a jazz performer specializing in valve trombone for over thirty years. He is the author of THE VALVE TROMBONE BOOK, and is dedicated to performing and teaching this special important instrument. Barry has been performing in the Los Angeles jazz clubs and also for special celebrity events for many years. His jazz recordings have received jazz radio play in the USA and Europe.
The concepts of TONE and ARTICULATION Barry teaches are based on the playing of valve trombone great BOB BROOKMEYER. Of the great valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer had perfect tone and control and brought the valve trombone in to the jazz spotlight. He is in the JAZZ HALL OF FAME and is probably the most recorded jazz trombonist of all time including slide trombonist. His approach is the proper way to play valve trombone and this IS the focus of Barrys teaching.
This book is all about valve trombone history and the great jazz masters who have played it. The book has biographies and discographies of BOB BROOKMEYER, ROB McCONNELL, BRAD GOWANS, JUAN TIZOL and BOB ENEVOLDSEN. There also are many playing tips and a special chapter by valve trombonist BOB RAMSDELL ON THE BEST VALVE TROMBONES TO BUY, NEW AND VINTAGE MODELS. I also share my musical experience as a jazz valve trombonist for many years.
